The City Council of Greenville, about 35 miles northeast of Grand Rapids, voted to allow the medical cannabis industry, but not the adult use (recreational) cannabis industry.
Medical-only establishments can have a very hard time staying in business, particularly when the Michigan medical cannabis market is about 1/20th the size of the adult use market. (See CRA statistical reports).
Additionally, state cannabis funds are only made available to municipalities in which adult use retailers or microbusinesses are permitted (neither are right now in Greenville). In 2023, that was $51,841.21 per store. In 2022, it was $56,433.33. (Source) What important community priorities could Greenville fund with those distributions?
